PROGRAMS 2007

Adopt-A-Creek

Urban development impacts on water quality become more significant each year.

This program serves as the foundation for emerging watershed stewards and sentinels.

We are looking for participants in our “Adopt-a-Creek” program in which watershed creeks are matched up with area schools to enhance students' learning experiences.  Our mentoring/tutoring program includes slide presentations, educational materials and in-the-creek experiences.

Parallel to the youth program, FOBWC is offering an adult program, the members of which are recognized as Stream Sentinels advocating our mission, providing information and ensuring proper water protection measures at construction sites after they have completed an initial half-day workshop and a half day reconnaissance tour in the watershed.

You will receive a certificate of completion, monitoring equipment and a t-shirt/sweatshirt that identifies you as a stream steward.

Residential Rain Garden Workshop

Residential storm water runoff is a potential source of oil and grease, heavy metals, fertilizers, landscape chemicals and suspended solids.

FoBWC is offering several Rain Gardening workshops to the public, including but not limited to individuals, neighborhood groups, community organizations, and environmental groups.

Rain gardens are aesthetically landscaped shallow depressions that intercept and temporarily retain storm water from individual properties.  Rain gardens can remove pollutants as they restore a more natural hydrology to improve watershed health while maintaining the landscaping you have come to appreciate.

Our workshop tells you how to construct and plant a rain garden.  The half-day program provides hands-on experience in constructing a rain garden (max 300 ft2), while providing you with the know-how and confidence to install a rain garden on your own property.  We will cover the following topics:

  • Watershed dynamics and the effects of impervious surface on storm water
  • Storm water pollutants of concern
  • Direct connection vs. biologic interception
  • Rain garden sizing and construction issues
  • Plant material recommendations
  • A local Rain Garden example/visit
  • Question and answer
  • Brochures and handouts on storm water related issues and related information

·         Site selection, Planting layout and design (max 300 ft2)
